News - House Prices are starting to flatten off

July 19th 2007

House Prices are starting to flatten off say major UK lenders Halifax and Nationwide although the Halifax has raised its annual house price increase forecast up by 2% to 6% due to strong activity in the first half of the year.

Despite an overall shortage of housing which is maintaining upward pressure on prices, there are early signs that the series of base rate rises - most recently to 5.75% - are beginning to put the brakes on demand.

However according to data from the Council of Mortgage Lenders, mortgage lending reached a new all-time record of £34.2 billion in June - an increase of almost £3 billion over May - this increase is partly seasonal as spring and summer are traditionally popular times for moving house.
