News - Wealth Gap Biggest in UK for 40 years

17th July 2007 - A new survey from the Joseph Rowntree Foundation announced that the gap between Britains richest and poorest people was at its largest for 40 years. During the 1980's and 1990's a polarisation had taken place which led to richer and poorer households clustering in different areas.

It's now much less likely that a poor household willl be close to a richer one - the poor are more likely to be found in the inner cities while the rich have migrated to the suburbs. Unsurprisingly, the greatest concentration of wealthy households are to found in the south east of England.

More houses have become 'poor' but fewer are 'very poor' and the number of average households has decreased as the gap between rich and poor grows.

The Joseph Rowntree Foundation is a UK charitable research body founded by the eponymous confectionery magnate. It seeks to gain a better understanding of the causes of social difficulties and look at ways of overcoming them.
